ASA/USA Softball Taps Digital Scout to
be Official Handheld Statistical Software
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK (January 11, 2002)
- The Amateur Softball Association of America
(ASA) has announced an exclusive agreement with Columbus, Ohio based
Digital Scout International, LLC, producers of software systems that
enable coaches and fans to track statistics and scouting information
on handheld computers. As part of the agreement, Digital Scout has
been named as both "ASA's and USA Softball's Official Handheld Statistical
Software."
The Amateur Softball Association (ASA) is the
National Governing Body of the sport in the United States and a
member of the United States Olympic Committee (USOC). As the National
Governing Body of Softball, USA Softball is responsible for training,
equipping and promoting, women's, men's, junior girls' and junior
boys' National Teams that compete in international and domestic
competitions. Most recently, the USA Softball Women's Olympic Team
won the gold medal at the Games of the XXVII Olympiad in Sydney,
Australia.
The agreement runs through 2005 and was officially
announced today at the Amateur Softball Association's headquarters
in Oklahoma City. In addition to having the right to use both the
ASA and USA Softball official logo in packaging and marketing, Digital
Scout will become integrated into USA Softball's National Team programs.
Digital Scout will also work with USA Softball to integrate new
and advanced softball coaching information and technology in its
ongoing software development.
"The Amateur Softball Association is excited
about the new relationship it has formed with Digital Scout," said
ASA Executive Director, Ron Radigonda. "This new software works
as a great statistical tool, and we are looking forward to implementing
the system into our National Team programs as well as our grass
roots programs."
Digital Scout's software system uses the popular
Personal Digital Assistant (PDA), portable handheld computers on
the Palm Operating System, and PC software for collecting and analyzing
player and team performances and printing reports. The point-and-touch
technology facilitates the collection of real-time statistics at
the games. The user taps on the players' pre-loaded numbers, and
then taps on the field diagram and key play indicators on the PDA
screen. Digital Scout automatically calculates team and individual
player statistics on key items such as hits, runs, strikeouts and
walks. Real-time onscreen charts allow the user to see hitter tendencies
during the game. The handheld device synchronizes with computers
enabling the printing of numerous reports. These reports can be
faxed to area newspapers, used as coaching tools, and used to improve
game strategy.
"We are very pleased that the ASA has
recognized the benefits of incorporating Digital Scout into its
programs," said Digital Scout CEO Jim Emery. "Coaches regularly
tell us that Digital Scout saves them hours every week and helps
them win. The ASA will help us take our software system to softball
coaches not only nationwide, but worldwide."
About Digital Scout:
Digital Scout was founded in 1995 by Jim Emery and Bob Mauck, coaches
who had met as collegiate teammates at Ohio Wesleyan University.
Their mission was to bring new technological advances to the tasks
of sports scouting and statistics collection. The company was launched
with Football and Basketball Scoutware in 1995. Basketball Statware
and ShotChart, a fan product, were added in 2000. Statware products
in volleyball, softball, and soccer were launched in June 2001.
All products take the Palm OS point-and-touch technology and apply
it to real-time statistical collection and analysis. After the game
or match, the data is transferred to the PC via the HotSync function
for printing reports and shot charts.
